Final Video
Our final video. Improved editing from the last cut, the video is now much smoother and in synch.
Digipack
Our digipack was designed around the band's colours and fonts using a free template from the internet.
Digipack - Disc
This is the final disc for the dikipak, We made a second one because the first one didn't really fit with the overall greek theme of the pack.
Final Advert
This is the Magazine Advert for our media product that coincides with our Digipack
We decided to keep the overall theme of them both the same using a recurring background texture image and using the same 'Ancient Geek' font that fits very well with our bands star image and helps create a solid brand identity.
We decided to keep the overall theme of them both the same using a recurring background texture image and using the same 'Ancient Geek' font that fits very well with our bands star image and helps create a solid brand identity.
This Advert was created through using photoshop and used a range of skills, all of the images used were taken by us in a separate photo shoot so all images are copyright free and originals
the tools used included
- Text tool to create Band and album name using 'Ancient Geek' font to link with digipack
- Magic wand tool to erase any unwanted sections of images that weren't necessary
- Layer opacity's to give an effect that the images are faded into the background texture
- Blending modes to give different and varied effects on blending images into the background texture
Video - Fourth Rough Cut
This cut contains our new footage and looks a lot better than the original cuts. Again this was to be our final video but after receiving some feedback we have decided to go back to editing and make some minor changes to smoothen out the sequence. Editing By Daniel, Camera work by Nathan, Kieran and Steph. Greenscreen footage by Nathan, whole group input for most of the video.
Video - Third Rough Cut
This cut has footage spanning the full song. This was to be our final cut but after receiving some feedback we have decided to re-film a lot of the band footage.
Video - Second Rough Cut
This second rough cut has most of the footage added but still with a lot more to be edited in. The complete cut should be expected soon.
Rough Cut
We still have a lot more footage to be added to the film, as well as a small amount of footage we need to film or re-film but this is the main lip synching for the video.
Chimera Records: Our Brand!
We decided on a name for our record label and ensured it had not already been taken, then using free sock images and some effects from photoshop i created a logo from scratch for our record label which will be used in numerous places to link our products.

9 Screen Analysis
This is the video for "this is war" by 30 seconds to Mars, although im not a massive fan of the song I think the video is excellent.
The first screen is of the words "if we don't end war" which is a famous quote by historian H. G. Wells. this is the first part of the video and relates to the title of the song.
The second shot came just after the quote, showing a computer generated image of the earth with coordinates around it like you might see in a military action film.
Screen 3 comes later in the song, you can see the silhouette of a soldier with a sunset background, again this is something you would usually see in a film rather than a music video. it also relates to the lyrics and title of the song which are all about war.
The fourth shot is of another soldier in a desert firing a gun, the props and editing of this suggest that the directors went for a full cinematic experience in the video rather than a cheap rock video.
The next two shots appear in a montage of clips from older wars and events, they have been edited into a montage with wars from throughout history.
Picture 7 is a shot of metal shrapnel and vehicles flying through the air, the shot seems to be a point of view shot because the camera was unsteady and shaky as if the person was running, it also has computer generated effects such as co ordinates and a lens flicker as if you were looking through a security camera.
The next shot is a close up of a soldier, showing his reaction to seeing the metal objects flying through the air, again there are effects over the camera to make it seem more military like, as if you were watching him through a camera.
The final shot shows all of the metal gathering in the sky to form the well known logo of the band, this then fades out to finish the video.
This video is typical of 30 seconds to Mars,. they always make their videos more like a film and are great to watch but probably very costly.
Digipack Analysis
This digipack is more advanced than most, containing a number of books and sections. The logo (and digipack cover art) can also be found on lots of merchandise that came out prior to the release of the album which makes it easily recognisable as muse's album. The cover is more art than advertisement as it does not contain any reference to the band or album apart from the names in the corners of the cover. despite this, the album cover is now well known and easily identifiable so the marketing of the logo must have worked. The bright colours of the album on a white background make it stand out and very attractive, The resistance is one of my favourite album covers and i like the simple yet attractive design.
The shadows and silhouettes relate to the title of the album "monster", in films and on tv we often see shadows of monsters instead of clear views of them. it also makes the album cover make more sence, it is normal to have the band on the cover but it would not fit with the title if they were sat nicely in normal light.
The band have lost a few members since their last album so it is also understandable that the members are on the cover of this album, showing that there are now only 3 of them.
Skills Audit
Digital Technology
What equipment/software did you use to produce your production? - we used final cut, Imovie, Garage band, and live type. the main software we used was Imovie and Final cut to edit and compose the sequence. the software contributed because it gave me access to effects such as lighting settings to make the film seem more like noir. During A2 i will develop these skills by experimenting with more effects and using them to a better standard.
Post Production
Same As Above. in A2 i will improve by using final cut more than Imovie as it is better software.
Research And Planning
I completed around 10 coursework tasks before filming including call sheets, research into the genre and production companies and more. To improve in this area i would do more research into the companies as last year i spent a lot of time researching genre conventions.
Conventions of real media texts
In AS I analysed a number of media texts such as a 9 frame analysis of the opening sequence of 3 film noirs. to improve next year i would do a more detailed analysis of more media texts.

Advertisement Analysis
This is a magazine ad for The Foo Fighters greatest hits album. It is a very simple advertisement that has the album cover (top section of page) and some information about release dates and how you can acquire the album underneath. Other adverts i looked also had a similar layout, many of them showing the album art then having information either above or below. This ad also includes some of the tracks that will be on the disk, not all ads do this but as it is a greatest hits album you would expect the most popular songs to be shown to gain some interest.
The biggest font is on the release date which takes up a large section of the page beneath the album art. the color is white and contrasts the background so stands out more clearly than the rest of the advertisement. Next there is a list of ways you can buy the album including download and the logo for amazon.
Just below that there is a list of some of the popular songs that are on the disk in a slightly darer color which will attract the attention of anyone who likes these tracks, it also mentions a new track exclusive to this album. Finally at the bottom of the page there is the bands website, also in white to stand out.
The advertisement is very similar to other advertisements of the same genre, the main object usually being some album art and the album title or logo followed by release dates.
Shot Count Task
Muse - Resistance on MUZU.TV
The video has around 240 shots in 5 mins, parts of the video go very fast and parts go slow to match the tempo of the song, the majority of the cuts are on the beats of the song.
The video is made up from recordings from a concert that the band played and is made up of mostly long shots and medium shots showing the audience and the band, the video shows the atmosphere of the concert with the dark lighting and neon laser lights, there are also some shots from close to the crowd (almost POV Shots) putting the viewer down on the floor with the crowd.
Live concerts are a popular way to make a video for this genre, possibly because it is cheap to do without having to spend much extra time shooting. Another reason could be because rock bands spend a lot of money on instruments unlike other genres (such as dance) so they can show them off in videos.
Like most rock videos it also spends a lot of time showing the band members and their instruments instead of having a story behind the video, not all rock videos are like this but it is normal to see it.
Opie Portrait
Opie Portrait - TO create the portrait we used photoshop and traced over our face, hair and features on separate layers then removed the man image leaving the portrait behind. i also added a colored background to make it look better.
Music Videos Research
In His Book Dancing in the Distraction Factory Andrew Goodwin points out characteristics and features that can be found in music videos. I will analyse some music video's using Goodwin's theory
This video sticks to its genre characteristics (as Goodwin suggested). Rock videos typically focus on a performance or the band and their instruments. this video consists entirely of the band playing the song in the room which sticks to genre and Goodwin's theory.
Goodwin also suggests that there is a link between the lyrics but as the video is simple and around the band performing, there is no link between the visuals and lyrics. However there is a strong link between the music and visuals, there are a lot of cuts on the beat and the band jumps and moves in time with the music.
Goodwin also says that the demands of the record label (e.g. close ups of the artist) may create patterns that recur throughout all o the bands videos. i have had a quick look at other videos from this band and they all seem to be the same style, usually a video of a band in a room playing the track with lots of close ups and long shots to get the full band on screen, i dont know whether or not this is due to the record label's demands but it is a recurring theme.
This video also sticks to the genre, focusing mostly on the band and vocalist rather on a big storyline, however unlike the first video it has more actors and props.
The lyrics and visuals do not have a direct link but they can be linked through a number of ways when you look deeper into the meaning of the song, the lyrics sing about time running out, about the government and about the planet and the visuals suggest a government meeting. The music is also linked go the visuals with lots of cuts on the beat and the band and actors moving in time with the music.
This video is also very similar to the others by the band, with lots of close ups of the lead singer while focusing on instruments and band members rather than stories, most likely due to the record labels' demands.
This music video also sticks to one of Goodwin's main points, the voyeuristic treatment of the female body seen through he male eyes. half way through the song, some of the female actors take off some of their clothes and start dancing more provocatively, so this video definitely sticks with Goodwin's theories.
